How MADs work

🦷 How MADs Work
Mandibular advancement devices are oral appliances designed to treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and snoring. They function by repositioning the lower jaw (mandible) forward during sleep. They must be custom made for each user. This forward shift tightens the soft tissues and muscles of the upper airway, particularly the tongue and soft palate. As a result, the airway is less likely to collapse or vibrate, which reduces both apneic events and snoring. The breath health program will provide you a path to get an MAD for $0-2000.
✅ Scientific Validation for Mild to Moderate OSA
MADs are clinically validated for patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea (AHI between 5 and 30). Key points of validation include:
Randomized controlled trials have shown that MADs significantly reduce AHI (Apnea-Hypopnea Index), especially in patients with lower BMI and positional apnea.
Meta-analyses (e.g., Ramar et al., 2015; Phillips et al., 2013) have found that while CPAP is more effective in reducing AHI, MADs are often preferred due to greater comfort and adherence.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) both endorse MADs as first-line therapy for: 1) Mild OSA 2) Moderate OSA when CPAP is not tolerated or refused
